Constellations

Constellations, patterns and the 88 sky regions

A sky region, a line drawing and a mythological figure are related, but they are not the same thing.

Regions versus drawings

The International Astronomical Union recognises 88 constellations covering the sky as bounded regions. Familiar stick figures are a way of finding patterns within those regions. Artistic figures add cultural context. Turning a drawing layer on or off does not move the stars or alter the astronomical definition of a region.

An apparent pattern

Stars that form a pattern from Earth can be at very different distances. They need not form a single physical group. Use a constellation as a signpost while keeping the distinction between an apparent arrangement and a gravitationally related star cluster. The glossary explains light-years and catalogue distance separately.

Explore with the layers

Search for Orion, then compare the stars with constellation lines and artwork. Yorungez's illustrated centre is schematic and is not a boundary measurement. What rises above your horizon depends on your position and the date. A named constellation is not interchangeable with a deep-sky object located in its direction.
